SOCIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES

SOCIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES First, are the social and organizational changes? The processing of information has become increasingly visible and important in the economic, social and political. A statistical test is the growth of specialized occupations in information activities. These occupations now account for the largest share of employment in many industrialized societies. The largest category is that of data processors, mainly office workers, “followed by the information producers, distributors and employees of infrastructure.

Second, is technological change? The new information technology (IT) based on microelectronics, together with other innovations, such as optical disks and fiber optics, allow huge power increases and cost reductions in all types of information processing activities (the term ‘ information processing ‘covers the generation, storage, transmission, manipulation and visualization of information, including numerical data, text, audio or video).

The information processing aspects of all jobs may change through IT, so the revolution is not limited to information-related occupations, such as industrial robots change the nature of factory work.
Computing and telecommunications (and broadcasting fields like or editing) in the past were quite distinct sectors, involving different technologies. At present, these sectors have converged around a few key activities, such as using the Internet.

Current computer and telecommunications devices handle data in digital form using the same basic techniques. These data can be shared by many devices and media, all of them processed and used in a wide range of information processing activities.

The rate of adoption of new IT has been very rapid, much more than other revolutionary technologies of the past, as the steam engine or electric motor. At 25 years of its invention, the microprocessor had become commonplace in almost all workplaces and in many homes, not only present on computers, but in a vast variety of devices, from telephones and televisions to washing machines or toys.
