BlackBerry Torch 9810 & 9860 – The Differences

BlackBerry’s Torch 9860 and Torch 9810 are two very similar phones – the largest difference being in the aesthetics of the devices. The 9860 offers users a slide down QWERTY keyboard, whereas the 9810 is a fully touch screen device and doesn’t have a QWERTY – a step away from RIM’s usual style.

Both phones are attractive devices and both bear a similarity to the first Torch, which in itself is not a very bad thing. The 9860 is very similar to the candy bar shape touch screen Android phones that are extremely popular at the moment. It is a slim enough phone with a width of 11.5mm. The 9810 is a thicker device due to the keyboard – 14.5mm – and it leaves a bulge in your pocket. It also weighs nearly 30g more than the 9810 and is 162g.

Both phones have a Snapdragon 1.2GHz single core processor and 768MB of RAM, meaning they are quite nippy, though not blisteringly fast. Both phones are also able to hold a 32GB SD card, meaning they have plenty of room for your media. The mobile phone comparison shows that the 9860’s larger screen is far better for watching footage on as it has a 3.7in screen as opposed to the 3.2in of the 9810.

The two phone’s have the same new liquid display screen, which is a huge improvement on the BlackBerry’s older Torch screen and feels quite good to touch. Both phones have a 640×480 resolution, which is average at best to be honest, but is okay considering the not so large screen size.

The two Torch phones have the new BlackBerry OS7, which is quite good, though doesn’t stand up to the excellence of Android 2.3 and iOS 5, which both leave it behind in terms of functionality and user friendliness. RIM has loaded the two devices with the usual load of BlackBerry applications and this is a positive in terms of operating system.

The two BlackBerrys have 5mp cameras that are capable of shooting at 720p and though lacking in pixels, they make up for it with excellent autofocus. This ensures that amateur photographers can take the optimum quality of pictures with the phones and is a plus.

Overall, the two BlackBerrys are average devices and probably don’t honestly compete with the top Android phones. They however offer the BlackBerry experience in a hugely improved fashion and will be popular with fans who want something a little different.
